N800 case, second life, new domain.

N800 update:

• I installed a launcher on the desktop area...so getting to xterm and web and a few other things is very easy...I haven't been able to customize it as of yet... not sure if it's possible.

• I need a more accessible case. I am using a nintendo ds lite zipper case. This case is not convenient. I need something that protects the screen and the unit from droppage, and easy to get it out of my pocket and into action.

• I am frustrated when using some websites...it can be a pain to use the stylus to choose a field and then use the touchscreen to type. I would like to test a bluetooth keyboard.

I have dreamt of a truly portable computer for years. The n800 is possibly the closest thing to my dream yet...but it still has a way to go.

I want to be able to accomplish common computing tasks with as little trouble as possible...and with great speed. Instant on is required...ease of use is desired.


I now have a presence in second life. Mia nomo de Secondlife estas Leganto Writer.

My new domain is leganto.org. I have not decided yet whether it will be web only...or offer other services. It is possible it will have a text or graphical mud.

More n800

Hieraŭ I updated my n800 to the new firmware and began reconfiguring it.



1. Download Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard. Check!
2. Install said wizard. Check!
3. Place n800 in update mode (need to already have the usb drivers installed.) Check!

• Power down completely
• Hold down the button with the house on it and power up.
• When you get the usb icon you are connected.

4. Start Update Wizard. Check!

After a very short amount of time passes, the new firmware will be installed. That's it.

Here are some of the things I am doing to re-configure my n800:


1. Install xterm.

• Installed clean from maemo.org
  

2. Installed Skype.

3. Installed GAIM.

4. Installed dropbear SSH.

5. The next thing I wanted to do was get telnet and a few other things working.
found some good info from http://www.makuchaku.info/blog/category/maemo/

• Downloaded data.tar.gz and extracted on my windows machine.
• copied the busybox file to busybox2 on a flash card.
• put the flashcard in my n800.
• ssh'ed into my nokia using putty and logged in as root password rootme.
• copied the busybox2 file from flashcard into /bin/
• and then
  

  cd /usr/bin
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 ip
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 nc
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 ping
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 ping6
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 telnet
  ln -s /bin/busybox2 traceroute

• Then I telneted into a mud from my n800! w00t! Can also telnet into routers and switches. This will make a nice portable rig for work.

6. Moved notes to the top of favorites so I can use my fingers to open it quickly and type notes with big keyboard.





Things left to do:

• Install desktop launcher CHECK!
  
• continue to configure interface for ease of use. move xterm to top of favs...etc....
• install more wireless software...stumbler? wep +peap anyone?
• install vnc
  
• install rdesktop CHECK! no keyboard :{
  
• get more connectivity options...portable access point?
• bluetooth keyboard?

Okay...That's where my Esperanto breaks down hodiaux. The rest of this post will be mainly in English.

Update: I got my Wii. It is awesome. Zelda and Super Paper Mario are my current favorites. I also got a used PS2.....Lego Starwars FTW!


The new version 4 firmware just came out for my N800. It's a pretty darn good version. Will post again with more about it.
